RC Planes
My first RC plane Link to heading
I built my first remote controlled plane in 2014 at home during my break after second semester. It was a simple design with only rudder and elevator and no ailerons. I used a 3 channel transmitter and receiver. The plane was powered by a 1400kv brushless motor and a 20A ESC. I used a 1500mAh 3S LiPo battery. I used a 9g servos for the rudder and the elevator. It was made of balsa wood and had a wingspan of 1m. I cut the wood using HSS saw blades and shaped the aerofoil by sanding it using sand papers manually. It was a task intensive job and yet, I couldn’t do a good enough job of making an aerofoil. I had a hard time flying it.
Plane with a dihedral wing Link to heading
Learning from my mistakes, I decided to build another plane funded by the Flying and Robotics Club, NITK in which I was a member. I used biofoam for construction of wings, elevators and rudder as it was much easier to cut and shape. The fuselage was simply a wooden spar. Since there is no ailerons, the wings were made dihedral for stability. This planes was much easier to fly and was beginner friendly due to its stability and lesser control surfaces.
The delta wing Link to heading
I now wanted to build a delta plane. With just two servo motors, a fusion of aileron, elevator and rudders could be achieved. I used the design template provided by FliteTest. While building this plane was easy, flying it was challenging due to the controls being new to me. It was a fun experience.
Nitro engine plane Link to heading
This is the best plane I’ve built. It was a project by Flying and Robotics club. It had a 9cc IC engine running on “Nitro” fuel (nitro methane and methyl alcohol). It was constructed with corrugated plastic sheets. It had a wingspan of 1.5m. It was a 4 channel plane with ailerons, elevator, rudder and throttle. It was a very stable plane and was easy to fly. It was a great experience to fly this plane.
